AHA! Moment

Monday, August 3, 2009  at 9:54 AM
A Prescription for Happiness. Picture this: You go to the doctor and tell him about your ailment. The doctor says, “Great! I now understand your symptoms. What I’m going to do is prescribe a medicine for your neighbor.” You’d be pretty angry, right?” But that’s what we do, writes Anthony de Mello in his wonderful book Awareness, when we think our happiness depends on someone else’s actions.

The next time you find yourself thinking: “I wish he/she would change…” or “I’d be happier if he/she would only…,” stop and remember de Mello’s story about the doctor prescribing medicine for your neighbor, not you.

Do you have an Aha! moment that you'd like to share?

So true! Peace comes to those who recognize we're not here to fix others. We are only responsible for how we respond to them and, more importantly, who we choose to travel with on this journey. I'm reminded of that every day.
